CHICAGO (AP) — During Independence Day, just about everyone had thoughts about what freedom meant. But probably none more so than a man who was in Chicago’s Cook County Jail.

The man committed no crime — other than wandering into a room that wasn’t being used. When the door closed, he ended up locked inside — where he spent 30 hours of the July Fourth weekend contemplating the freedom he didn’t have.

The man was at the jail visiting his son when he entered the room, where he ended staying from 6 p.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Monday.

Jail investigators are trying to find out why the door was open — and why no one noticed the man hadn’t checked out of the jail as a visitor.
